Glion Students Earn Future Leaders Awards

Glion Students Earn Future Leaders Awards
by Glion Institute of Higher Education  12 January 2016

Last semester, three young ladies from Glion Institute of Higher Education were awarded the Future Leaders Awards by the International Association of Conference Centers (IACC) after participating as moderators and animators in the campfire workshops at the General Assembly, IACC Europe Knowledge Festival, held in Milan.

The students who received this prestigious recognition were Ariane Broquet (Swiss), Anastasiya Fomina (Russian), and Olga Larsen, (Russian); they were all semester 6 students from the Bachelor of Business Administration in Hospitality Management.

The awards were given in recognition of the quality and pertinence of their presentations at the event. Specifically, Olga and Ariane’s presentation was about the trends that will affect the future of meeting venues. Olga discussed the threat that technology poses to meeting venues because of the growing popularity of tools such as technological glasses, like Google Glass. Indeed, these tools are enhancing the quality of long distance and virtual meetings. As for Ariane, she explained how a venue could be made more or less attractive depending on the use of sensory marketing, which is a new frontier where brands will seek to reach and influence consumers by associating certain smells, sounds and sights with the brand experience.

Anastasiya’s presentation was on a different topic. “During my presentation, I discussed the key elements of leading a healthy lifestyle and suggested services that meeting organizers can offer to satisfy the clients who care about their health, even when they are travelling for business. The ideas mostly focused on food and coffee breaks, as well as activities. I chose to discuss this topic because business people nowadays pay more attention to their health and mind their weight and the food they eat. To be healthy is trendy, and therefore meeting organizers should make sure the food and activities at events fit with a healthy lifestyle,” Anastasiya said.

One of the event participants took notice of their presentation and mentioned it in a blog article about the conference:

“The Camp Fire sessions at La Villa were equally inspiring with great content coming from the session conducted by Olga Larsen and Ariane Broquet, student-interns currently studying at Glion School of Hospitality. We learned about the latest technologies and their application to meetings of the future. My big take-away from this was realising how we can improve venue site inspections by taking on board research that proves sight and smell are the most powerful ways to impact on decisions. So we need to make our rooms look visually appealing while ensuring there’s coffee brewing and bread baking there!” Read the full article here.

This presentation was chosen by the CEO of IACC and Claudio Zucco, our Glion professor who facilitated the student’s participation for this project. As Mr. Zucco explained, “The benefit for the school is that the quality of our students has been made visible to the managers who attended the IACC event. Additionally, the benefit for the students is that they have applied what they have studied in class in a professional environment.”

For more information about the IACC, and the event in question, visit the news page of their website.

Event Management and Hospitality Management Courses

In the hospitality management program, Glion students learn about a wide variety of event management practices from a hospitality and business standpoint. Additionally, living and studying alongside students from the Event, Sport and Entertainment Management program also offers a unique opportunity for the hospitality management students to experience and collaborate on a wide range of events, including sports and cultural events, conferences with visiting industry leaders, excursions and external events. They learn about the higher levels of event management, going beyond the operational side, and these presentations reflected their learnings. The topics were appreciated by the attendees as relevant and interesting topics for event management professionals to consider for the future of conferences and events.

Letter from an MBA internship

Letter from an MBA internship
by Glion Institute of Higher Education 16 December 2015

By Iryna Tsoma, MBA in International Hospitality and Services Management ‘16

From her internship at the Belmond Napasai resort on the north coast of Thailand’s Koh Samui, Iryna Tsoma sent an email to Mrs. Jacquline Lutz, Head of Career Relations to share her experience. This internship as a Sales and Guest Relations Intern is an integral part of Iryna’s MBA, the Professional option for the MBA in International Hospitality and Service Industries Management. After six months of working and living in paradise at this exclusive luxury resort in Thailand, Iryna will return to Glion’s Bulle campus in January 2016 to complete her degree and dissertation. From this letter, we can tell that she is gaining more than entry-level experience, she’s participating in senior management activities and making memories that she’ll treasure the rest of her life.

Dear Mrs. Lutz,

Warmest greetings from sunny Thailand.

I am very happy to share with you some news from my internship. To start with, it is an extremely beautiful environment and every morning I feel blessed to wake up with such a stunning sea and jungle view. I was very lucky to get an accommodation in the hotel; more precisely, I am living in one of the guest villas which has exceeded all my expectations.

But it’s not only the surrounding beauty makes my internship so special. We’ve got an extremely professional and open-minded management team who are willingly involving me in all activities and global projects. It gives me a lot of empowerment and I have a chance to learn not only about sales and guest relations. I participate in the event planning,  and I assist the Manager of the F&B department, Jan Lorenzen, a Glion alumni that you have put me in contact with. Last but not least, our Resort Manager and the Regional Managing Director Asia involve me in the budget planning meetings which has made my dream come true. Everything I have learnt in the previous semester in Glion came out of books into reality here, and I am learning so much more than I could have imagined when accepting this offer.

With my best regards,
Irina

Internship at the Boston Consulting Group

Alexander

(International Baccalaureate Diploma)

Internship at the Boston Consulting Group
by Glion Institute of Higher Education 7 December 2015

Alexander ten Hoedt (BBA Hospitality 2016) is currently completing his 5th semester internship at the Boston Consulting Group in Zurich. This experience in an international consulting firm has allowed Alexander to go outside of the hospitality industry for a closer look at the medical technology sector, and it has given him some ideas for future career opportunities where hospitality and healthcare meet.

About Alexander:
Nationality: Dutch
Age: 22
Program: BBA in Hospitality Management
Applied Learning: Restaurant & Kitchen

Background before Glion:
•International Baccalaureate Diploma at Haut-Lac International Bilingual School in Switzerland
•1 week Medtronic, Inc. Marketing department
•3 months F&B experience (1 Michelin star restaurant, breakfast, room service)

First Internship: Front Office Trainee, Hotel Pulitzer, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Amsterdam, NL, 6 monthsCurrent Internship (Semester 5): Trainee, The Boston Consulting Group, Zurich, CH, 6.5 months

Our questions for Alexander:

1.How has your experience been at Glion, so far?
I am convinced that I’ve made the right choice by following the hospitality management degree at Glion, mainly due to its broad program and excellent combination of practical experience with academics. From what I’ve seen, Glion hospitality management students develop a wide set of skills that are applicable both in the hospitality and consulting industry, as well as many other industries, if not all.

First and foremost, the academic and analytical capabilities that students develop and nurture at Glion are a big advantage, but the ability to interact with guests/clients in a professional way is critical and problem solving skills are part of the skill-set that Glion graduates master.

The power of this bachelor degree is that these skills are sought after by many companies on a global scale and the degree will open many interesting doors that you wouldn’t have thought existed.

In professional life a good balance between IQ (intellectual intelligence) and EQ (emotional intelligence) is required to successfully lead an organization. Both aspects are well taught at Glion.

2.Describe a typical work day and week on internship.
As a trainee at BCG, my typical day consists of working on the consulting projects or cases to which I am assigned to assist. Our work involves financial data checking, analysis and management, advanced analytics and visualization setup/design/maintenance. Obviously, around these activities we engage in many discussions among partners of the firm as to the interpretation of data in light of what is going on in the industry.

During my internship, I supported a global commercial leader in medical technology (medtech) benchmarking. Participating companies include 9 out of the 10 largest medtech players and over 80 businesses overall. They wanted to know, to what extent they had to been able to move the needle since the first benchmarking 3 years ago and what should be the thrust of business model innovation to win in the medium term. Duties include supporting interviews with senior executives, large database management, develop new data analytics tool and conduct deep data analysis.

The workload during a typical day is manageable, and long hours are definitely possible, but I have a strong interest in the case and the industry, which helps a lot. Throughout the week I also join case team meetings and process project updates to maintain the focus within team.

3.What do you do during your free time?
This internship is an intense experience, but there are many things to do in and around Zurich. Mostly on weekends I go and explore Zurich and just recover from the week. BCG organizes football trainings during the week with other consulting firms in Zurich, as well as rowing trips on Lake Zurich. BCG also organizes several larger events (office retreat, large sports tournaments and dinners) which are really cool to attend and meet like-minded people from across the company’s offices.

4.How is this experience strengthening your training and knowledge from   the academic program?
It is not obvious for a hospitality management student to join the program I’m following at BCG, but it certainly has been an absolutely wonderful experience with many opportunities to grow, develop and gain insight in those industries and practice areas that interest me the most. In my case, I’ve been focusing on the medical technology industry to gain further insight and understand the business principles, innovations and trends that apply there.

I see a great future for hospitality students to develop careers in healthcare. The management of hospitals has a very large hospitality component.

In the end, the hotel function of a hospital is increasingly important in the competition among hospitals in the world. Besides this is the gap between wellness and medical care narrowing and patient experience becomes more and more important. There is developing clinical evidence that this last element is even having a profound impact on the recovery of patients.

It’s no surprise that from a historical perspective, hotel school graduates would most likely end up in the tourism and hospitality industry. Only in the past decade or so has this trend shifted and widened the career opportunities for hospitality students.

Consulting, banking and luxury brands are a few of those career paths that attract many graduates, and those industries seek different skills (i.e. leadership capabilities, customer service, open-minded individuals, out-of-the-box thinkers), which are often found in us hotel school graduates.

Although the courses that Glion offers don’t align perfectly with the tasks I do on a day-to-day basis, not like pure business and economics degrees, they have given me a basic understanding of business that spans across both the horizontal and vertical perspectives of any organization.

5.What benefits do you expect gain from this internship?
From my internship, I am gaining valuable insight into the healthcare and medical technology industry and I’m learning the strategies that work within it. In addition, I am working in a highly interesting and stimulating work environment with colleagues from varied backgrounds who share the same strong interest in business strategy, entrepreneurship and innovation.

These insights and experiences will shape me to be an even more open-minded, out of the box thinker, with a stronger set of analytical skills.

6.Do you believe this experience will impact your remaining studies or your career objectives?
This internship has affected my perspective on career opportunities and interests. During this internship, I’ve been exposed to a great number of interesting colleagues with fascinating backgrounds and life stories. It’s been inspiring to learn how people with such varied backgrounds and academic profiles end up in the same industry. The environment has reminded me of how Glion students work and interact together and how we learn to think with an international perspective and with the perspective of the people you work with.

Things to do in Switzerland in Winter 2015/2016
by Glion Institute of Higher Education 30 November 2015

Switzerland offers an amazing array of winter activities for people of all ages. Take advantage of the lull between the end of exams, the graduation, and the year-end holidays to visit Switzerland’s many seasonal events and enjoy the snow before the high-season starts. We’ve put together this little guide of the things that you can do in Switzerland this winter, with many activities that are nearby the Glion or Bulle campus.

Christmas Activities

The Montreux Christmas Market
Montreux, 10 minutes from Glion
November 20 – December 24
This is one of our all-time favorite winter events to enjoy with friends, colleagues and family. From the last week of November to the 24th of December, the lakeside of Montreux is transformed into the “Marche de Noel”, or Christmas Market, which creates an enchanting atmosphere of holiday cheer and offers many attractions. The market features mini-chalets where regional artisans sell festive arts and crafts, while the food courts and temporary restaurants offer typical Swiss food and some more exotic fare, in easy-to-handle portions and at reasonable prices. The ferris wheel give visitors a charming view over the light-strewn city and surrounding region, and the “guest of honor” section hosts the goods and services of one featured guest country; this year, it’s Hungary.

The Chateau de Chillon
Territet, 10 minutes from Glion
December 5 – 20

The Chateau de Chillon is fun to visit year-round and the influence of Montreux’s Jazz Festival and Christmas Market extends to this historical monument during the month of December. On the 4th, there will be a New Orleans Style jazz dinner. From the 5th to the 20th, Medieval Magis will envelope the castle with a medieval fair that features music, crafts, and food as they would have shared in medieval times.

The Christmas Village
Caux, 10 minutes from Glion
November 20 – December 24

You don’t have to be a child to love the magic and wonder of Christmas as it comes alive in the snow packed village of Caux in the Christmas Village, another extension of Montreux’s Christmas activities. In the village, you can see elves and reindeer, visit the magic forest, send your wish list to Santa, and enjoy Christmas treats and crafts.

Festival Lausanne Lumières
November 18th to December 31st 2015
A festival of lights inspired from different places in Europe.

Ski and Snow Activities

A Gourmet Winter Walking Tour
Les Paccots, 20 minutes from Glion or Bulle
“Les Paccots is a small holiday village in the Alpine foothills of Fribourg, it is an ideal place for snowshoeing enthusiasts. Two signposted circuits of 3 and 4 km are a great way to discover the snow-covered forests and meadows. Various gourmet paths lead from one alpine hut to the next and to mountain inns, where local delicacies are served in taster portions. Depending on your appetite and mood, you can choose between the Little Gourmet, Family and Panorama Paths: everyone is guaranteed to have their fill – not least of the fabulous views.
